Rare Bird is the 38th episode of Season 4 of the Animated Series.
Synopsis[]
Mr. Bean is desperate to tick off the last elusive bird in his bird-spotting book.
Plot[]
The episode starts with Bean looking through the window with his binoculars. He looks at a tree but finds nothing. Bean then looks at another tree and he finds a blue bird. So he brings out his bird-spotting book and checks the page of the blue bird he just saw. Bean then flips the pages but he finds an unchecked page, and the bird shown is a rainbow-colored bird, annoying Bean because he realizes he's not yet done. So Bean continues searching for the rare bird where he finds it only to realize it's only a hat of an elderly lady. Bean looks at the next page of the book and sees a forest where he needs to go to find the rare bird.
Bean goes to the countryside and sees a bird sign. He goes inside the field and enters a bird watching shack where there are also two people who are bird watching. Bean greets them to which they shush him. He asks them if they have seen the rare bird which is also unchecked in the poster. The two birdwatchers shake their heads and they continue birdwatching. Bean asks the birdwatchers if he can also watch to which they let him. He fixes the chair but it makes a squeaking noise, annoying the other two birdwatchers and making them shush him. The three of them start birdwatching but Bean gets bored, annoying the other birdwatchers again and making them shush him again. The two birdwatchers resume birdwatching while Bean wants to eat so he opens a bag of peanuts but he makes a loud crunching noise when he eats one, prompting the other two to shush him yet again. Not wanting to interrupt the other two again, Bean slowly bites the other peanuts but they're still loud enough to make the other two glare at him. Bean then empties the peanuts to his mouth, and the other two can resume birdwatching. Bean then uses his binoculars and tells the other two he saw a bird but he tells them he was only joking, infuriating the two of them. Bean decides to leave and loudly says bye to them, which they angrily shush him.
Bean returns home, still unable to find the rare bird. Teddy "tells" Bean something that Bean thinks is a good idea. Bean goes to the shack where he paints the rare bird on wood. Bean places the ladder on the shack and he climbs it to put the fake bird on the tree branch to make it seem like it's a real bird. Bean uses his binoculars and "discovers" the rare bird so checks it in his book. Bean pictures the fake bird as "proof" that he "discovered" the real bird. Bean then drives off and returns to the bird sanctuary. He returns to the birdwatching house and tells the two birdwatchers he "saw" the rare bird in his garden and shows the photo as "proof". Shocked, the two birdwatchers follow Bean to his home. Bean stops them and asks them to pay him £5 each which they reluctantly do so. They enter the backyard just as the gust of wind blows the fake bird down to the roof of the shack, worrying Bean. The two birdwatchers can't find the bird so Bean tells them that it may have gone to bed to cover up his lie. He tells them to leave, angering them because there was no bird and therefore they paid him for nothing.
After the two birdwatchers leave, Bean goes up the roof of the shack and gets the fake bird. Bean has an idea so he goes to the shack and gets a ball of thread but Scrapper wants to play with it so Bean shoos him. Bean ties the fake bird using the thread and put it back on the tree. Later, the two birdwatchers return outside Bean's flat; Bean goes outside when he sees them through his window. Bean then lets them pay £5 each again and they birdwatch when they return to Bean's backyard. They still don't see it so they drink their tea. Bean pulls the thread, revealing the fake bird, and he tells them it's there. Shocked, the two birdwatchers spit their tea and resume watching but Bean hides the fake bird again, disappointing them. Scrapper sees the thread and plays with it but his claw gets stuck, inadvertently revealing the fake bird. The two birdwatchers look in awe while Bean gets shocked. Scrapper rips the thread and the fake bird falls to the ground, exposing it to the two birdwatchers as a fake. They realize that Bean had conned them so Bean gives them their money back and they leave angrily. Bean sits on the chair in sadness then the real bird appears; Bean is happy when he sees it. Bean returns to the two birdwatchers and tells them the real bird is there but they don't believe him and drive off. The bird then flies on Bean's head just as Bean tries to convince them it's here but he then gives up.
