Mr. Bean takes a photo with a coffin

Funeral is a 2015 sketch for Comic Relief.

Plot

Mr. Bean (Rowan Atkinson) attends a funeral, where he does his best to fit in with everyone else, though he proved to be bad at it; This includes noisily blowing his nose and crying excessively when the people around him start mourning for the deceased person in the coffin. Bean then sees a man bowing towards the coffin before kissing a woman (Rebecca Front) in the front row and shaking hands with her husband. Bean, thinking he has to do this as well, bows towards the coffin, kisses the same woman in the front row passionately and then hugs her husband.

Another man approaches the coffin and gently pats it. Bean does the same before knocking on the coffin with a hand he conceals. He then pretends the deceased person is alive before explaining to the husband and wife that it is just a joke, though the two were not amused but rather offended. They then express shock when Bean began to take selfies on the side of the coffin.

Before Mr. Bean could return to his seat, a child puts a flower on the coffin and hugs it. Bean, who has not brought a flower with him, puts a bag of lollies on the coffin and hugs it in an attempt to copy, only to make the stand collapse by accident, to the horror of the people in the church. After some difficulty, Bean puts the stand back up. While helping the husband in placing the letters back on the coffin, Bean unfortunately disarranges the words and he ended putting together the word "vole" instead of "love."

Upon noticing the wife crying while she is being consoled by the husband, Bean attempts to comfort her by attempting to snog her only to be stopped from causing more trouble. Bean then goes to sits back down on his seat and the priest starts speaking. When the priest mentions that the funeral is for a man named David, Bean realises he is at the wrong funeral and hurries to the chapel next door in his Mini.

When he gets there, he realises he has left his lollies in the chapel he was originally in and crawls back to retrieve them, which he did before crawling back out.

In addition, the sketch where Bean takes a selfie with the coffin, was branded as distasteful. Despite the criticism, the sketch received positive reviews.

  • Actor Ben Miller appears as the man Bean sits next to in the chapel. In Johnny English, Miller acted as the side kick of the titular main protagonist Johnny English.
  • Ironically, the Funeral sketch appears to be inspired by the movie Four Weddings and a Funeral, where Rowan Atkinson played Father Gerald.
  • Though Mr. Bean took a total of two selfies in the sketch, however, Atkinson, who physically reprised his role as Mr. Bean, took two more selfies, possibly during shooting; these include Bean smiling with his lips closed in one and him having a serious expression in the other. The first two selfies made it to the final cut.
  • This sketch is possibly inspired by the Act 3 from the pilot episode of the live-action series.
