Synopsis[]

YouTube/IMDb[]

Mr. Bean's bookcase collapses, so he buys a new one in the hardware store. He is annoyed to learn that he has to assemble it himself. Bean attempts to assemble it but fails miserably - a screw is missing. So he goes back to the store to steal a screw. Finally, he joyfully assembles the bookcase.

Plot[]

Mr. Bean tried putting a bust on one of the shelves of his bookcase, but it caused it to move.

Mr. Bean tried putting a bust on one of the shelves of his bookcase, but it caused it to move.

Mr. Bean takes a bust from his parcel and places it on the top shelf of his bookcase, but then the bookcase shakes suddenly. Bean is scared for a second, even trying to catch the bust in case it falls but fortunately, the shaking stops quickly, until he hears it creaking again, which quickly stops. He looks into the parcel again, but just then the bookcase shakes again and now it seems it's going to collapse any moment, so he quickly grabbed the things from the shelves; a flower in a vase, a hand bell, a piggy bank and two books and throws them on the armchair. When he goes to the bookcase again to take the bust, he manages to take it just before the bookcase collapses. Mr. Bean then decided to go a furniture store to buy a new bookcase.

Bean entering the furniture store.

He goes to a furniture store called ÄCHE. He's looking for a parking spot on the parking, and he finds some spots right next to the entrance to the store. He goes out of his car and locks it, but then a mother with a baby, that parked next to where Bean parked now, tells Bean that the spots next to the entrance are for parents with children only, pointing to the sign which shows so. But Bean quickly comes up with an idea. He opens his car boot and takes Teddy with a piece of fabric from the suitcase. Then, he takes the suitcase from his car and places it next to him. He looks in his car boot again and quickly wraps Teddy in the fabric to make it appear as a baby, so the mother would think Bean has a baby. Bean pretends that his "baby" is crying and even shoos him. The mother is a bit shocked. Then, Bean takes his suitcase and closes the car trunk and enters the store, greeting the security guard at the entrance earlier. After entering, he goes up the escavator, and goes to take a trolley. He places Teddy in the basket in front of the cart and pushes the cart so he can place his suitcase on the bottom part of the cart.

After taking the map off the wall, Bean now begins looking for the bookcase area in the store.

After taking the map off the wall, Bean now begins looking for the bookcase area in the store.

He goes up to a map on a wall that is rather complicated to understand. He tries figuring out the way to the section with bookcases, and when he thinks he knows where to go, he goes forward, but then he returns back to the map, confusing him. He's annoyed because he thought he actually knew where to go. Then, he comes up with an idea. He looks left and right to see if nobody is looking in his direction and then removes the map from the wall so he can read it while he is walking. He passes by the bathroom section, living room section and the kitchen section, looking around along the way to see where's the section with the bookcases. He stops by the bedroom section, but something is odd - he can't see any people around, and he finds it strange. Meanwhile, there's lots of people in the place the map was before Bean took it, complaining to the store manager and asking him for the directions to the places where they want to go to. The store manager/security then tells them to calm down and assures that he will find the map.

Mr. Bean took the things from his shelf to the store to put them on the bookcase and see how they look like on it.

At the time, Mr. Bean finally arrives at the bookshelves section and looks at some of them, but none of them are appealing to him due to being of weird shapes or colours. But then, he finds a bookcase that resembles his old bookcase and he likes it. So he comes up to it to see it from close. Then, he opens his suitcase and puts all the things he packed in it (that were also previously on his old bookcase), on the shelves. When putting the bust on the top shelf, he worries about the whole bookcase collapsing again, but fortunately it didn't happen. Then, he decided to push an armchair closer to the bookshelf, but feels like something is missing, so he quickly went back to his cart and unwrapped Teddy from the fabric to put the fabric on the top of the armchair. Then, he sat down on the armchair to compare how would the bookcase look like looking on it from the armchair. He likes the bookcase, so he decides to buy it.

The store manager found the map.

The store manager found the map.

He looks for an employee to come up to him, but there's no one around, so he grabbed a hand bell and tried calling an employee so he could pay for the bookcase. Eventually, an employee arrives. Bean tells the employee that he wants to buy the bookcase, but the employee tells Bean to go downstairs, but Bean shows the employee that he wants to buy the case next to him, that has already been assembled. The employee keeps telling him to go downstairs, but Bean disagrees, and keeps telling him that he wants to buy the bookcase next to him, to which the employee tells Bean that it is not for sale, but Bean says it is if it's right next to him. The manager eventually finds the map in Mr. Bean's shopping trolley's basket. He soon realised that Bean removed the map from the wall. Then, the employee tells the manager to show Bean downstairs which he reluctantly does so. Bean tells them both to just give him a minute to take the things he put on the shelves of the bookcase and when he's done packing them all in his suitcase, the manager shows him the way again, so Bean takes Teddy from the armchair and takes the cloth from the armchair and goes to the warehouse with the manager.

The flat pack looks nothing like the bookcase from the store, which confused Bean.

They enter a lift which takes them to the warehouse and when the lift opened, Bean couldn't believe his eyes when he saw the enormous warehouse, filled with flat-packed furniture on high shelves. The manager goes inside the lift of a forklift and lifts it up with a remote when Bean is still looking at all the shelves, visibly being surprised by them. Bean then stops by the forklift and decides to go inside it to steer it. He began moving the lift up and down, annoying the manager inside of the lift. When the lift stopped, the manager/security guard exited the lift and told Bean to stop, and Bean agrees. The manager goes up the lift again, still looking at Bean with anger and then grabs the box containing the bookshelf from the upper part of the shelf and gives it to Bean. Bean looks at the picture of the bookcase and compares it to the box the manager just gave him and he is confused because the box looks nothing like the bookcase because it is not assembled, and the manager tells him he has to build it himself. Bean is surprised that he still has to build it despite the supposedly high price and becomes annoyed but he decides to buy the bookcase anyway and returns back home.

Bean begins building the bookcase in his flat.

He takes the pack upstairs, to his room and places it on the floor. He takes Teddy and places him on the armchair. Bean takes the pack and all the pieces fall from it. After removing the pieces of the bookcase from the box, Bean takes the plastic bag containing nuts, bolts, washers, screws and the building instruction and tries to open it but he accidentally opened it the wrong way, causing the bolts and screws to be scattered all over the floor. He collects them all to one place on the floor and then starts assembling the bookcase, thinking he knows exactly what to do, but ends up building a dinosaur from all the pieces instead, annoying him. He is confused until he noticed the instruction next to his armchair he didn't notice earlier. He takes the catalogue from the floor and attaches it to the wall. Bean tries assembling the shelf one more time and he ended up finishing assembling it, but he got stuck inside the cupboard. He frees himself by forcefully opening the upper part of the cupboard but after this the shelf dismantled, frustrating Bean. He goes to see the catalogue again, confused on what he's doing wrong and then he realised there were more pages of the instruction he didn't notice because this part was folded and when he looks at the last picture, he realised that there was a single screw missing. So Bean begins searching for the missing screw everywhere; he opens the grandfather clock but it's not here, it's not under his duvet or under the armchair either, or in the book or inside of the cup and after realising the screw is actually missing because he couldn't find it anywhere, he has to return to the store to get it.

He climbs even higher to open more boxes to see if there's a similar screw to the one he needs.

He climbs even higher to open more boxes to see if there's a similar screw to the one he needs.

Now it's evening and Bean returned back to the store. He parked at the same parking spot as earlier, locked his car and quickly rushed to the store but stopped by the entrance because the manager/security is about to close it at the same exact time. Bean tries to explain to the security guard why he wants to get to the store, but the manager/security closed the store, annoying Bean. Bean then sneaks to the place outside with forklifts and decides to use one to sneak into the store through an open window. He gets inside and goes to the warehouse. He climbs on the high shelves and opens random packs to get a similar screw. He picks some from the box and compares them to the one he needs on the picture, but they're different so he throws them away. He saw an another one, but it was still the wrong one. So he decided to climb even higher on the shelf and he's forced to hold onto the edge of a box so he won't fall down. Meanwhile, The Store Manager/security guard is relaxing in his office, watching TV. He takes off his shoes and grabs a cup of coffee and tries drinking some of it, but spills it all on the TV as he hears a loud banging noise from the warehouse caused by Mr. Bean falling on the ground with the boxes.

The manager/security guard discovered that Bean was the one who broke in the warehouse.

The manager/security guard discovered that Bean was the one who broke in the warehouse.

Realising there is an intruder, the manager leaves the room to investigate and grabs his flashlight/torch. Bean is searching for the screw on the floor, amongst many opened boxes, until the manager comes to the warehouse and quickly spots Bean and tries stopping him but ended up stepping on the screws, hurting his feet and Bean quickly runs away. Bean runs upstairs, to the furniture area, and unscrews a screw from a TV stand, but it's still the wrong screw, so Bean throws it away. The manager caught up on Bean and got to the furniture area as well. Then, Bean tried to take a screw from a dresser, but it was still the wrong one. But just then, Bean finally found the same bookcase he bought earlier and quickly goes there to take the correct screw, with success. After this, the manager reaches Bean and Bean hid the screw behind his back. Bean ironically asks the manager if he could help but just then, the bookcase collapses because of the missing screw, causing all the other adjacent shelves to collapse too and go down like dominoes.

Mr. Bean finally assembled the bookcase and put all the things on the shelves.

Mr. Bean finally assembled the bookcase and put all the things on the shelves.

Furious because of that, the manager tries attacking Bean but then, an unbroken, assembled bookcase collapses on him, trapping him, so Bean runs away and goes back home. Bean was finally able to assemble to the bookcase entirely and with the last screw. Later, he put his things there and everything is good. He goes to sit on the chair and takes Teddy but then noticed that the missing screw was right next to Teddy all this time but he didn't notice it.

Trivia[]

  • Mr. Bean parked on the same parking spot he parked at earlier when he returned to the furniture store to get a single, missing screw.
  • The bust figure, seen on Bean’s bookshelf is resembling Ludwig van Beethoven, revealed when he sang the first notes of one of the Symphonies.
  • The figure is also a nod to the Season 1 episode “Keyboard Capers”, in which Mr. Bean was revealed to be a fan of Beethoven’s music.
  • The furniture store seen in this episode called ÄCHE is a visible parody of IKEA. The name is probably based on the word “ache” because it’s a real ache trying to build IKEA furniture.
  • The colours of the ÄCHE store are green and red, whilst IKEA main colours are blue and yellow. The main colours of the ÄCHE store were most likely chosen to be those two so it won't resemble IKEA way too much.
  • When Mr. Bean enters the store, he looks on the map and thinks he knows where to go but then later he returns to the map again. It is a reference to real life IKEA stores being large and it's easy to get lost in them if you don’t follow the arrows on the floor.
  • The bookcase Mr. Bean wants to buy is called "BÖOKKASE" with the letter "o" being modified with an umlaut or diaeresis. It is a reference to IKEA items and furniture having their own, unique names that sometimes mean something in Swedish or are a fun play on words.
  • When a worker approaches Mr. Bean to assist him when he wants to buy the bookcase, he tells him to go downstairs, to the warehouse, but Bean denies when the actual bookcase is just next to him and he wants to buy this exact one, what he doesn't know is that it's just for display and you have to go to the warehouse downstairs to take a package with the unbuilt furniture, which you have to build by yourself. This is the case in real life IKEA stores.
  • The store manager/security guard takes Mr. Bean to the warehouse by a lift to give him the package with the bookcase but when Bean sees just a small package, and not an already built bookcase he is confused and the manager tells him that he has to build it and Bean tells him: "At that price!" but decides to buy the bookcase whatsoever because he needs it. It's a reference to real life IKEA stores having furniture you have to build, instead of having already built furniture for sale, most likely to save money and space.
  • The instruction guy, seen on the instruction of Mr. Bean's bookcase was also inspired by the instruction guy on the instructions from IKEA.
  • The arrows seen on the floor of the store and the warehouse are also a reference to IKEA having arrows on the floor, showing the correct direction.

Goofs[]

  • When Mr. Bean returns to his flat from his second visit in the ÄCHE store during evening, we could see a look on the flat but all the lights appear to be turned off even though in reality the light was on in Bean's room.
  • Near the end of the episode, when Mr. Bean finally builds the whole bookcase and looks at it, there's no things put on the shelves but one frame later all the things are seen on the shelves.
