Derrick is a minor character in Hair by Mr. Bean of London. He is a barber who runs his shop. He is played by Tony Haase.
Not much is known about the character other than the fact that he is very inattentive and irresponsible. When Mr. Bean comes to get his haircut, Derrick is under the impression that Susie who is presumably his receptionist or even a fellow barber herself is in the shop and asks her to answer the phone.
However upon realizing Susie is off for the day Derrick takes the phone call and Mr. Bean being the only person on the cutting room of the barber shop (Derrick has a separate office away from the cutting floor where his phone is) is presumed to be an actual barber. This results in Bean cutting a boy’s hair very badly. The boys mom leaves her son alone with Bean to give the boy a haircut while she looks for her purse in a shop across the street. While the haircut Bean gives the boy is horrible he loves it.
Derrick returns to cut Bean’s hair but the phone rings again resulting in another prolonged phone call. Bean as a result cuts a man’s ponytail off by accident and cuts off an elderly gentleman’s toupee and puts moose and cut hair from the trash on his head to cover the bald spot.
Eventually the mother and her son return and despite the sons protest that he likes his haircut the mother is angry and demands to know where Bean is. The man with the pony tail and elderly gentleman also return to complain but Bean sneaks out putting a calendar of Prince Charles on his head and escapes from the shop before he is caught and blamed for the bad haircuts.
Since Derrick left Bean alone to take the long phone calls he is irresponsible and has no regard for the customers in his shop.
It is not known what happened to Derrick after Bean escaped from his shop although the boys mother requests him to fix her sons bad cut. Since the three customers complained angrily about their awful haircuts it could be presumed that Derrick hired an extra barber to assist him in the event he was busy on the phone or maybe even went out of business for his lack of attentiveness which resulted in customers getting their hair ruined by Bean. He may also have had to refund customers their money out of his own pocket for their cuts.
Derrick seems unaware that Bean cut the customers hair badly despite the mother and pony tail man explaining it to him. However since Bean escaped Derrick could not confront him leaving him to be responsible for the disastrous results of the haircuts.
Had Derrick caught Bean, Bean could have ended up getting arrested and/or fined with Bean possibly having to serve time in prison as barber’s and cosmetologists are required to have a license by law in order to cut or style hair. Since Bean did not have a license Derrick could have pressed charges against Bean had he caught him.
