Cash Machine is the 6th episode of Season 4 and 58th episode overall of Mr. Bean: The Animated Series.

Mr. Bean wants to buy a cupcake, but his wallet is empty, so he has to visit a cash dispenser. As he tries to use it, his card is declined and eventually swallowed by the machine. Bean steals a box of tools from a repairman's truck to unscrew the front of the machine in order to retrieve his card, thereby triggering the cash dispenser's alarm and alerting the police. Bean manages to hide inside the machine before the police officers find him. He then accidentally falls into the vault, finds his card and escapes just as the police officers raid the vault. Bean tries his card again after realising that his note of his PIN was upside down (he was reading it as 1861, but in fact it is 1981). Finally, Bean successfully withdraws the money and buys the cupcake. As Bean drives back home, the police officers mistakenly suspect and arrest the repairman.

Plot

Mr. Bean after eating his breakfast/lunch.

The episode starts with Mr. Bean finishing his breakfast in his flat and he is full. He burps once and says "Excuse me!" to Teddy as a joke. Then, he uses Teddy to cover his mouth when he burps once again to make it looks like Teddy is the one that burped now. Next, Bean stands up and opens the cupboard and takes out a box of cupcakes, only to realise that it's empty as he opened it. Mr. Bean suspects that Teddy had eaten the last cupcake (obviously as a joke), even making Teddy nod when he asks him if he was the one that ate the cupcake, even though Teddy is just a plush bear. So then Bean decides to drive to the Claudia's Fancies cake shop to buy some more cupcakes.

When Bean arrives, Bill Durr is driving in his van whistling and is trying to find a parking space. When he finds one, Bean immediately takes it before him, much to his dismay. Bill then parks his van near the top of a hill and soon joins the queue leading to an ATM. Next, Mr. Bean goes to Claudia's Fancies that is just opposite to the ATM, and the bank. Before entering he takes a look of the display of the bakery and asks Teddy if they should both choose a cupcake with strawberries or a cupcake with chocolate but then Claudia, the seller places some new mini cakes with a strawberry on top and he decides to buy one. He enters the store and greets the seller and shows her the cake he wants to buy. She says it's a good choice and tells Bean the price, that is £5. Bean is excited about getting the cake until he hears about the price so he opens his wallet but a small moth flies out of it, signifying that he has no cash on him. But then Bean looks at the ATM across the street and remembers he still has his credit card and he could withdraw the money from it to pay for the cake. So he shows Claudia his credit card and tells her that he will be back soon.

Outside, Bean sees a woman entering the shop, worrying Bean because she might want to buy one of the cakes and there's only five of them. So Bean goes across the street and joins the queue and there's a few people waiting already. Bean becomes a bit impatient because he worries that the cakes might get sold out before he could withdraw the money. Then, he looks behind him and sees a woman buying the cake that he wanted previously. So he decides to cut the queue by going to the left side of a woman in front of him and poking her right shoulder; when she turns around Bean just goes in front of her. She is confused at first but then realises that Bean actually cut the queue and he pretends like nothing happened. Annoyed, the woman checks the time on her watch and leaves. The woman standing right next to the cash machine is done so it is Bill Durr's turn. Bean is happier because the queue is now much shorter, only consisting of Bill, an elderly woman and himself.

The elderly lady moves slowly closer to the ATM, annoying Bean slightly because of her slow movement. Then, he hears the door of the cake shop opening and the bell and sees the lady coming out of the bakery with her cake. He gasps and the elderly lady's dog barks at the other woman, wanting to eat her cake. Whilst the lady isn't looking, Bean removes the leash from the dog's collar to make it run to the cake, and to the woman, which scares her and makes her run. The old lady calls the dog and Bean does the same. She then goes from the queue to get her dog back. Bean is happy that there's only one person in the queue except him now. But it is taking ages for Bill Durr to finish so Bean tells him to hurry up, but then Bill turns around to Bean, scaring him a bit and tells him to "Shut it!".

Mr. Bean then comes up with an idea. He sneaks to Bill Durr's van and pulls the handbrake, which will cause the van to roll down the hill and crash into a hole in the road. Mr. Bean then returns back to the ATM, clears throat, and tells Bill to look at his van, pointing at it and it's about to fall in a hole in the road. Bill panics and runs quickly back to his van, now stuck in the hole. With Bill out of his way, Bean inserts his card into the ATM and pulls out a note of his PIN number, which is 1861. Bean types 1861 in the ATM, but the numbers are wrong, angering him. He tries again, but the PIN code is still incorrect, annoying him even more. Worse still, he turns around and sees a man entering the bakery and he's about to buy one of the cakes he wants to buy, worrying him. Bean types the PIN once again until his card is rejected and it's now completely stuck in the machine, and he is now infuriated, but quickly comes up with an idea.

Whilst Bill Durr is trying to remove his van from the hole by himself, Bean looks at Bill and makes sure that he didn't notice him approaching the van and opens the back door of the van and steals a toolbox from it and he also takes multiple traffic cones that were next to the van. He places five of the cones around the ATM but then notices a woman coming from the bakery with one of the cakes and there's only one left now. So he takes a screwdriver and tries to unscrew the front of the ATM in order to retrieve his card fast. Upon unscrewing just one screw, he triggers the cash dispenser's alarm and it alerts the police. Panicking, Bean wants the machine to stop making the alarm noise and then he sees the police coming so he removes even more screws and finally removes the front of the ATM and puts it next to the wall and hides inside the machine before the police officers notice him.

Both policemen stop by the bank. Bobby (Robert) McDim (the thin and tall police officer) accidentally bumps his head into the roof of the police car before exiting it. The shorter policeman is annoyed at him and tells him to hurry up. Robert then apologises and exits the car and puts on his police cap and goes up to the ATM and he looks at all the cones around the ATM and at the toolbox next to it and he's curious about the alarm. Bean is secretly inside the machine, holding the front of it and gets scared when Robert looks at the screen, thinking that he is looking at him, but fortunately he doesn't see Bean inside. Bean then uses his nose to press a button inside the ATM which turns off the alarm. After the alarm stopped, Robert thinks of leaving but then thinks of withdrawing some money so instead of going back to the car, he puts his credit card into the machine, and Bean can hear it coming through a pipe for verification.

Bobby McDim is happy because of the amount of money the ATM gave him, unbeknownst of that Mr. Bean was inside this whole time.

When McDim types his PIN number, Bean clears throat and begins to make beeping noises each time McDim pressed a button to make him think the machine is still working. Robert waits for the money but nothing comes out and he's confused. He clicks the confirmation button twice and then Bean takes out one £5 note for the policeman, beeping again. McDim is happy to see the banknote coming out but then Bean takes even more money for him, and Robert grabs the rest of the notes, shouting "I'm rich, I'm rich, I'm rich!", just as the other policeman approaches him. The sergeant asks McDim about what is going on; McDim tells him the machine is broken. So the sergeant tells McDim they are going to speak to the bank manager and Robert apologises.

Mr. Bean is relieved both police officers are gone now, but he accidentally pushes off the front of the ATM and slides down a chute into the vault and falls into a pile of banknotes. This action triggers the alarm that alerts the bank manager. Inside the vault, Bean searches for his card around all the money. The bank manager calls the police until he notices that the policemen are already there. The short policeman runs quickly to the vault, with Robert and the bank manager following him. At the time Bean stumbles upon a trolley full of cards and eventually finds his card and he's happy about it but then he thinks of how he should get out of the vault. So he approaches a pile of neatly stacked gold bars and uses them to build stairs to get out of the vault. He takes one of the bars just as he can hear the bank manager opening the vault. The sergeant tells McDim that he should get ready because they don't know who is inside the vault.

Finally, after such a long time, Mr. Bean buys the mini cake.

Fortunately, Bean manages to build the stairs before the policemen and the bank manager would come inside. He squeezes through the hole he fell through and closes the door to it. Both policemen look at the gold bar stairs and are very surprised by it and the sergeant claims that it is serious. When Bean gets out of the ATM, he tightens the screws. The sergeant quickly leaves the vault, knowing that Bean actually got away, but McDim stays because he's intrigued about the gold; to which the sergeant pulls him out of the vault. Bean tightens the last screw and puts the screwdriver back in the toolbox. Then, he pulls out his credit card and inserts it into the machine again and only now he realises that his handwritten note of his PIN number was upside down; he wrongly read it as 1861, but it is actually 1981. Bean's card finally gets accepted as he enters the correct PIN and he is happy about it. Then, he takes back his card and finally withdraws £5 to buy the cake he wanted. He happily crosses the street and gives Claudia, the seller, the note. She thanks Bean and gives him the last cake.

Meanwhile, Bill gives up pulling his van up out of tiredness and notices his toolbox near the ATM, he is surprised how it got there. He approaches the ATM and retrieves his toolbox just as the policemen spot him, believing him to be the suspect. The short policeman tells him that he is under arrest and he and McDim pull his arms, but he is just confused about the situation and tries to get the policeman off his arms. At the time, Bean rides in his Mini and he drives by the policemen trying to arrest Bill; he hides when he is driving next to the ATM, only revealing himself when the policemen were out of sight. Bean then drives back home, happy that he finally bought the cake he wanted.

Trivia

• This is the first time we could see the entrance and the interior of the Bank's vault, the second and last one being in the episode "Valuable Lessons".
• This is the first time we could see the interior of the confectionery store "Claudia's Fancies".
• This episode is a debut episode of Bill Durr. He would later appear in some other episodes of Season 4, and later also in Season 5.
• This episode marks the first appearance of Bobby McDim and the Sarge in Season 4. Last time they both appeared before this episode was in the episode "Wanted" of Season 2.
• This episode also marks the first appearance of the Bank Manager. He would later also appear in the episode "Valuable Lessons" of the same season.
• After withdrawing money from the cash machine, Bobby McDim forgot about his card and didn't wonder why he didn't get it back.
• This episode revealed the taller policeman's name, which is Bobby McDim. His full name was seen on his credit card as he inserted it into the ATM.
  • "Bobby" is diminutive of the name Robert, meaning that McDim's real name is Robert.
• In this episode, the policemen duo of the Sergeant and Bobby (Robert) McDim had a bigger role from the other episodes in which they both appeared in and were rather main secondary characters.
  • Whereas the shorter policeman's personality didn't change drastically from the previous three seasons (he only became a bit milder), McDim's personality was turned into a more clumsy and funny (previously he was more similar in case of personality to the shorter policeman).
• The scene where Mr. Bean slides down into the bank vault might be a reference to the WOOHPed tunnel system from ''Totally Spies!'' and ''The Amazing Spiez!''.
